If you don't know Blogger Love! is a series here on Hebridean Sprite Beauty that features some of my favourite bloggers that feature nail polish, skin care and cosmetics. Today's is G from Nouveau Cheap who only features items under $20 and is the drugstore and coupon Queen! She's also really friendly and approachable which I think in a big time blogger (she's very popular!) is a really great virtue to have.
1) Are you more of a Morning, Day, or Night time person?
Definitely a night owl.
2) Something you struggle with on a day to day basis?
Responding to email. There is never enough time in the day, unfortunately.
3) Favourite Animal?
Elephant.
4) Favourite Colour?
Very pale pink.
5) Preferred foundation coverage and finish ex. Heavy coverage, matte
Full coverage.
6) How old are you?
40.
7) First makeup brand that really got you interested in cosmetics?
It was the L'Oreal Shadow Riche eyeshadows from the 80s. Once I tried those, I was hooked.
8) Do you have any makeup, nail polish or skin care items that are perfect for you? (HG items) If so which- include shade names please.Maybelline Define-A-Brow eyebrow pencil in Dark Blonde is the PERFECT match for my brows. I have tried a zillion others but always come back to it. (G has just posted a full set of her HG items! You can check out them all and her reviews here!)
9) What is your favourite food? Drink?
Food: Nothing compares to homemade baked macaroni and cheese.
Drink: The Good Earth Peach Black Tea. I could drink a gallon a day.
10) Favourite Gem Stone?
I'm not really a jewelry person but I love opals.
11) Do you have any pets in your life? If yes, what are their names (and can we have pictures?)
Sadly, I do not. But I used to have a boxer named JD. :)
12) One place you’ve never been that you want to visit?
I cannot believe I've still never been to NYC. That's at the top of my list.
13) What inspired you to start your blog?
I used to work in an office where I was kind of the go-to person for all things beauty-related. One day one of my colleagues urged me to start a blog, so I eventually did it!
14) What are some of the most useful things you’ve learned about since you started blogging?
If you work hard, you're passionate and you write from the heart, the rest will fall into place.
15) Favourite Season?
Winter.
16) What do you use to take your blog photos? What type of computer?
I have two cameras and neither of them is fancy. One is quite old but excellent for close-ups, while the other is newer but under $100 and I use it for outdoor shots. I have a very standard PC--nothing fancy there either.
17) What genre of movies/books do you like?
I'm all over the place when it comes to books. I just finished re-reading Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, and then I read Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. I love fiction and nonfiction equally, but there are some genres that just don't appeal to me such as romance and chick-lit. I like difficult books that force me to think critically. If I want fluff, I'd rather turn on the TV!
18) Other hobbies or events that you’re involved in?
Blogging is my number one hobby, but I love to cook and bake (I'm a better cook than baker) and I love arts and crafts. I was really into jewelry making a while ago and I'm kind of doing that again in my free time.
19) Most unique eyeshadow you own?
Probably my original Urban Decay eyeshadow single in Road Stripe. I bought it when Urban Decay first came out in the early 90s (when the packaging was made of metal) and it's been long-since discontinued.
20) Most unique lip product?
I have a few MAC lipsticks that are quite old and were discontinued many years ago. They're pretty unique.
21) Favourite colour combinations?
I'm an earth-tone gal. I love soft, well-blended looks with lots of browns, taupes, golds, bronzes and olives.
22) Favourite piece of jewelry? Why is it your favourite?
All of the women on my mom's side of the family wear the same bracelet on their left wrist. As soon as you're old enough to wear a bracelet you get one from your mother and when you outgrow it, you get a larger one. We literally never take them off, so that's my favorite piece of jewelry ever.
23) Best drugstore product you’ve tried?
I can't possibly answer that, given the theme of my blog!
24) Random fact you'd like to share about yourself?
I hate tomatoes in sandwiches, yet I love them in salads.
25) Favourite Nail Polish Brand and why?
Oh wow..I don't think I can narrow that down! But some of my favorites are China Glaze, Sally Hansen, Wet n Wild and Maybelline.
26) Most unique polish you own, why?
It's actually not too unique but it's one of those coveted flakies: Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure.
27) Favourite polish colour to wear?
A year ago I would have said taupe/greige/mushroom, but I'm afraid I've burned myself out on those lately. So I'll go with a nice olive green shimmer.
28) What are the best top coat, base coat, treatments you’ve tried for your nails?
I really love the Essie quick-dry top coat for when I have zero time to wait for my nails to dry, but I also LOVE the new Milani top and base coats. They work beautifully together and really extend the life of my manis.
29) What is your favourite finish of polish? (ie. Cream, holographic, matte, etc.)
I'm a sucker for a beautiful creme, but I also love holos of course.
I want to thank G so much for taking the time to do this! If you've got the time you should definitely check out her blog- she's my drugstore go to girl for sure!

Cult Nails Iconic~ Review and Swatches
| L-R: Get it On Base Coat, Living Water, Iconic, Wicked Fast Top Coat |
Cult Nails for any of you that don't know, is a polish brand that was started by a fellow blogger, Maria from her love of polish. On her blog R3Daily (which I follow and love) you can really see the passion, creativity, hard work and care that she puts into each and every one of her polish colours. All her polishes are cruelty-free and lack the big 3 and Camphor which is great! This also means they don't smell nearly as bad as normal polishes.

The formula on this was fantastic too. I can't tell you exactly how long it wore for (because I'm testing the Cult Nails top/base coat at the moment and telling you would negate the results for that review, which I want to try some other polishes with the top/base combo first) HOWEVER, it applied like a dream, especially for a flakie polish. For any of you that have used polishes with flakies or large glitter pieces before, I'm sure you know what I mean when I say sometimes there is dragging issues or clumping, but I didn't experience any of that with this polish at all. I had a little difficulty at the tip of one nail but a quick sort of re-swipe over the area fixed it up no problem, so that is more of a flakie handling issue than a fault of the polish. All the photos above are with only two coats. At first I was worried as it looked magenta on the first coat but a second coat turned it into a beautiful rich berry.
Cult Nails polishes are $10 USD, which is fantastic because the quality (including the packaging which is easy to use, and has excellent brushes) is better than more expensive brands by far. Shipping isn't too bad either, especially because Maria often has sales and deals up. My polishes came to me individually wrapped in rough fabric-paper (which my gerbils adored being able to chew up into nesting material) and surrounded by cotton balls- which makes the polishes safe and provides you with nail polish removal. Not to mention eco-friendly!
Overall, I think this polish is fantastic. It's perfect for fall as it's a rich hue and it goes with just about anything. It makes me feel all sophisticated and chic when I wear it.
Sprite Rating: 10/10. This is going to be one of my staples I'm sure of it, especially for pedicures and in the fall. There is nothing bad about the polish, everything about it blew me away from formula to packaging to design. Maybe if they can get a consistent sticker on the bottom of the polishes (they have different fonts/layouts) but that's not an issue really as I rarely look at the bottom of my polish bottles anyways.
Would I buy it again? Yes. Absolutely 100%. Needless to say I'm excited to try my other colour Living Water and you all will be reading more Cult Nails on here in the future!

Blogger Love! with Rachel from The Beauty Spot
This is Rachel from The Beauty Spot! You can check out her blog here!
Most of the blogger love questions are the same, but I've added a few new ones as I realized that I was leaving out most of the nail polish bloggers I follow! The shame! Anyways, heres all about Rachel who has an awesome blog with wonderful swatches! :D
(As a side note the pictures of her and her hubby are from their wedding in St. Lucia, isn't she a gorgeous bride?)
1) Are you more of a Morning, Day, or Night time person?
More a day person mornings are a bit of a struggle and I'm pooped by bed time :) however I like to get up early on weekends I don't like to waste the day instead I play World of Warcraft for hours lolz :)
2) Something you struggle with on a day to day basis?
More a day person mornings are a bit of a struggle and I'm pooped by bed time :) however I like to get up early on weekends I don't like to waste the day instead I play World of Warcraft for hours lolz :)

3) Favourite Animal?
Dogs especially cute ones like sausage dogs :P
4) Favourite Colour?

9) Do you have any makeup, nail polish or skin care items that are perfect for you? (HG items) If so which- include shade names please.
This is difficult, I have never really found my Holy Grail items. I have only been into makeup majorly in the past year and a half so I'm still experimenting.
Primer is a must though I use Hi Fi Cosmetics Shadow Fix and couldn't use my loose indie shadows without it! Hi Fi Cosmetics colours have also been a revelation the colour obsessed like me! Sugarpill is also up there!

13) One place you’ve never been that you want to visit?
Japan no doubt about it
14) What inspired you to start your blog?
My frustration on reading blogs review 100 types of "brown" shadow I wanted to share what I like and that's usually very bright colours!
15) What are some of the most useful things you’ve learned about since you started blogging?
Lighting is everything, also not to "pack" on too much product on a swatch you want it to look natural and how people are going to use it. Also you don't have to have a top of the range camera for good results mine was only around £100 but has the functionality I need
16) Favourite Season?
Winter I love cuddling up in front of the fire and twinkling tree!
17) What do you use to take your blog photos? What type of computer?
I use Samsung ST70 Digital Camera - Black (14.2MP, 5x Lens) 2.7 inch TFT ScreenMy PC is not describable cos I'm a doofus, my other half makes sure it's up to spec and gaming ready!

For actions Sci-Fi, Action and that sort of thing I HATE chick flicks!! Books I'm pretty open I read a lot of fantasy and the odd paranormal one
19) Other hobbies or events that you’re involved in?
I am a big video game enthusiast. I play a lot of World Of Warcraft but also love other RPG's and action games. I'm actually going to the London MCM Expo in October dressed as Ezio from Assassins Creed (think London's Comic Con?)

27) Most unique polish you own, why?
Orly Space Cadet it's a true duo chrome and looks amazing
28) Favourite polish colour to wear?
Zoya Charla (I know I'm predictable!)
29) What are the best top coat, base coat, treatments you’ve tried for your nails?
The thing I have found works best for me is the Zoya color lock system it makes my polish last and last with minimal chipping I would purchase again
30) What is your favourite finish of polish? (IE. Cream, holographic, matte, etc.)
I hate flat boring polish I love holographic but I am always disappointed in them they look great in sunlight but I am in the UK!! I mean come on! I will always keep an eye out for holographic though, next to that is duo chrome and glitter and or neon!
Yay! Thanks so much Rachel! I certainly feel the same as you about a lot of different things like sausage dogs (so cute!) and holographic polish looking best in the sunlight but kind of meh inside.

Mac Me Over Swatches Links!
Mac Me Over is the newest collection coming out from mac lately and there are a couple really neat looking items coming out with it! Personally I want all four fluidlines (which would cost me a hefty $80 CND- scream of horror!). Moleskin eyeshadow also looks lovely and the Lady Grey quad. Anyways, here are a couple of other blogs showing swatches of this upcoming collection!
Yuki's Lazy Channel has the full collection swatched both on skin and paper (but the text is in an asian language, so I can't read it just look!)
Hopelessly Addicted to Makeup has swatches up (all over her arm! Plus I just love her tattoo as well) she's also got a Part 2! for even for swatches. :D
The Shades of U has the Fluidlines and Shadesticks from the collection all swatched out for you too! She's also got the lady grey quad and single eyeshadows swatched and up too!
Vampy Varnish has got swatches up by sub-collection (all part of Mac Me Over but different displays)- Icelandic Cool, Mac Basics, and New Black.
Karlasugar has two sub-collections up and I'm sure she'll have the third one up in a couple days. For now though here is Icelandic Cool and Mac Basics. (I'll add her New Black swatches to this page when she adds them)
Enjoy! (And tell me what has caught your eye!)

Tarte for True Blood Collection (links to swatches)
![]() |
| From Tarte's Facebook photos |
It's true I am an official Vampire junkie. I love True Blood and the Sookie Stackhouse/ Southern Vampire Mystery book series it was based off of. I adore vampire romances, vampire historical novels and vampire myths. And my love for make-up can meet my love for vampires I am a truly happy person. If you didn't see my previous post, Tarte has collaborated with the True Blood make-up artist to create this limited edition collection and I want it. Like now.
But since I have to wait as I just made a huge Venomous Cosmetics order (not to mention the stupid Canadian postal service is still down) I googled and found for you another picture and links to blogs with swatches and pictures, even a video.
- Board as Nails Blog- Palette swatch video, photos, swatch of lip and cheek stain
- Iron Spy Blog- True Blood Lip Stain swatch and review
- Iron Spy Blog- True Blood Cheek Stain swatch and review
- Beauty and Fashion Tech's Glamour Me Palette review and swatches
- Girl Gloss True Blood Lip Tint swatch
In addition to these two blogs I found some more information about availability on the Tarte Facebook page. This coming week Tarte will be posting swatches and looks with the items on their blog.
The collection will become available on Tarte.com and Ulta.com June 29th. It will be released in stores in Ulta and Sephora around mid-July.
Hope this was exciting for at least some of you!

Hebridean Sprite Beauty's 1st Birthday!
![]() |
| From image here |
As something that started as a way to express my more creative side as well as my need to shout out my opinion and keep up my writing skills this blog has most certainly accomplished it's original goal. I've also been able to really interact with some other awesome beauty junkies, felt like I've accomplished something and even had a stress reduction outlet! I've learned a lot and I hope I've been helpful as well.
In the coming year I hope to keep doing what I've been doing. Reviews, swatches, deals, links and opinions. Hopefully at least one giveaway and survey, as well as some sparse animal posts. I'm sure there will be more too- I'd love to hear your opinions! What would you like to see?
As a side note my Fyrinnae order came today! Perfect timing it's like a little gift to myself for this anniversary! How cool hmm? I hope to have swatches up soonish.
As for the coming couple of weeks things are going to be hectic for me! We're selling our house and moving to a completely different city- so packing, painting, cupboard and counter renovations and more will be going on. I'll try not to disappoint though.
Lots of Love to all my readers (I appreciate every single one of you!),
Krista, a.k.a. Hebridean Sprite :D

Blog Awards!
![]() |
| From the Unknown Beauty Blog! |
Recently I received 3 different blog awards! I couldn't believe it! So here are the blog awards and all they entail! :D
The first one I received was from the wonderful Olivia from The Unknown Beauty Blog Check out her great blog here! I adore that most of her photos actually have her covered up. That always makes me laugh as it really is Unknown what Olivia looks like!
Here's the criteria for the award!
~ Post about the award and copy the rules (there's not many! Yay!)
~ Link to the person who gave you the award!
~ Choose 3-5 blogs you would like to give the award to and link to them as well. Leave a comment on their blog to let them know!
~ Important: This award is for unknown or new blogs only!
Here are the three blogs I'm giving the Bloggy Award to!
1. the black panties! Here! I always feel a little risque going to her blog just because of the name! Her reviews are always great too!
2. Evermore Immortal 18! You can see her here! This girl is so so talented! Her looks are to die for good, so creative and stunning!
3. Miss Diorista! Check her out here! I love how spring-like her blog is and how she includes some of the neatest looking cooking concoctions! Plus she is a doll, so sweet!
Next up is the Stylish Blogger Award! Thanks so much Varnish Vixen for giving me this! I really appreciate it! Varnish Vixen is one of my top favourite nail bloggers, not only is she endlessly friendly and has the neatest quirky steampunk style I adore her photographs and her header is adorable!
Here are the Stylish Rules:
1. Thank and link the person who gave it to you,
2. Share 7 random facts about yourself
3. Give the award to 15 other bloggers and let them know about it.

Seven Random facts about myself!
1. The reason I got my gerbils (two little boys that are brothers) is because I was lonely at university. Ever since I got them I've snuck them into my residence despite the fact there is a no pets except fish rule. I figure since they live in an aquarium tank and drain their water bottle on a regular basis they can pretend to be fish if anyone asks. :D
2. I'm in science but I hate math and physics. I like the solidarity and confirmation numbers can give you I just can't manage to work them well myself.
3. I honestly believe I was supposed to be born in another era. I love history especially Scottish history and I adore myths and legends from the Britain as well. The fashion the activities such as horse riding, falconry, and embroidery. All of these things draw me so much!
4. I spend most of my time reading. To me it is the ultimate hobby and stress-relief.
5. Walking back to my place at night now is not nearly as intimidating after I had to go to the washroom in the dark in Tanzania. Worry of weirdo people has nothing over the worry of hungry hyenas.
6. I adore Cookie Dough ice cream. I also love Cherry Cheesecake ice cream. Some of the most decadent yummy things ever in creamy cold form. Ice Cream is a gift from the gods.
7. My favourite television show is Bones. I love how intelligent she is and yet completely oblivious to social norms at the same time. Plus the characters just interact so well together!
I've decided to only give the award to four others. Here they are!
~ Gina at Nouveau Cheap (I love all the awesome deals she has with dupes and swatches galore!)
~ Rae at The Notice: A Beauty Blog (She always has the best overview of some Canadian only brands!)
~ Cami at Cami Loves Kiwi Beauty and Dinosaurs (Such great reviews and I love her sense of Humor!)
~ Olivia from The Unknown Beauty Blog (Great Reviews, good swatches and such a wonderful name for the blog!)
There is another award that the lovely Miss Diorista gave me a while ago but I've run out of steam for this post! I'm hoping to get to it soon! Have a great weekend everyone!
