7 Indie Holy Grail Favourite Beauty Products

In no particular order here are some of my most used and loved indie cosmetic products.

1. Kiss My Sass Cosmetics: Tarnished Halo Eyeshadow
At the moment it looks like they only have the darker version Fireside Glow in stock but I have had no problem contacting the owner of Kiss My Sass Cosmetics in the past to ask for when it would be up in the shop again.

I have to say Tarnished Halo is one of my all time favourites. I love how romantic it looks on the eye. Soft, slightly smokey, pale matte grey with an intense copper sheen, this shade goes with a ton of different looks day or night. It has I would say medium coverage but only because it can be built up even more with a second layer for a really intense look. The full size, which will likely last me forever is priced at $6.00 USD. As with all non-matte loose shadows I do recommend a sticky base over your primer, which brings me to my next favourite.

2. Fyrinnae: Pixie Epoxy Eyeshadow Base
This is my all time favourite base when I use loose shadows or I really want to make my eyeshadows look more intense or foiled. It's not recommended for straight matte shades however, so keep that in mind. Pixie Epoxy is a slightly tacky gel of which you only require the smallest amount. A tiny dab for the whole eye-lid is all that is needed. I then like to use my finger and spread out the product before I apply my eyeshadow like normal or through a patting motion depending on how I want the end result to look. I love that this lasts all day, doesn't feel tacky for very long and has a shelf-life of 24-36 months. Plus it's not too expensive either at $6.50 USD for the full size.

3. Notoriously Morbid: Changeling Top Coat (Siren and Leshy)
Changeling Top Coat is such a neat lip product. It's a sheer liquid lipstick that is designed to add a duochrome-like sheen to whatever base lip colour you have on your lips.

Available in a variety of shades I love my two in Siren (a light blue) and Leshy (a light green). They go on easily and lightly on the lips and dry down completely matte for a long-lasting look. They make so many more lip looks possible! They're only $10.00 USD for two shades.

4. Sugarpill Cosmetics: Loose Eyeshadows in Lumi and Goldilux
At $14.00 USD each these are the most pricey of my list but they are stunning. Both vegan, and in cute fairly large jars these loose shadows are worth the price.

Lumi is a stunning white-blue with turquoise iridescent overlay and turquoise sparks. Very otherworldly. Goldilux on the other-hand is big time glam. The most sparkly, shiny, metallic, intense true gold shade I've tried. Only the smallest amount can amp up an eyeshadow look.

5. Scaredy Cat Cosmetics: Loose Mineral Eyeshadows in Hedgerow, Arctic Royale and customized
This little known brand has some true gems, plus their artwork is adorable!

Arctic Royale is a gorgeous silvered purple shade. Hedgerow is my favourite, it's a duo-chrome light purple/ turquoise, so ethereal. All of their shades retail for only $5.00 USD too. In addition you can do a customized shade in that you can take any of their shades and add a opaque or translucent glitter to it, which is such an awesome way to spunk up any shade that strikes your fancy. The only thing about the custom shades to keep in mind is that you'll need a sticky base for them. The customized shades are only $5.50 USD.

6. Haus of Gloi: Perfume Oil in Depravity
I love the long lasting scent that these perfume oils have. I personally like to dab some in my elbows and on the ends of my hair (as my skin tends to breakout in most areas due to fractioned coconut oil which is what is used as the base in these). You can also use these in a warmer for a room. They cost $12 USD for 5ml which lasts a decent amount of time as you need so little. Depravity is my favourite, they describe the scent best as: Pure corruption: clove, nutmeg lurk amongst the sweetest offerings of coconut, on a bed of rich golden amber, laden with dustings of sandalwood and spilled wine.

7. Limnit Lipsticks: in Olly Olly Oxen Free
These lipsticks are great. Long-lasting, comfortable mattes with great pigmentation, and they only cost $12.95 USD.

Olly Olly Oxen free is a deep ox-blood shade with a slightly purple undertone (which I prefer to the brown tones some oxblood shades have). I also like the clear portion of the packaging so you can see the actual shade through the tube. Plus, if you don't like this shade they have 22 more.

So these are my current top 7 indie favourites. I personally love indie companies, they seem to be more innovative and focus on having really great formulas. Eggnoggin- This smells exactly like egg nog. So much so that you get the slight eggy smell, and the rum and the sweet milk. I doubt I'll wear it very often but it is very realistic.

Three Treasures- I'm kind of on the fence for this scent. I don't dislike it but I don't exactly like it either. It smells mostly metallic with a very slight sort of musk/sandalwoodish undertone. Personally I think a male would like it more. I can see some people really enjoying this but not to my taste really.

Snow Wolf- Whoa evergreen! This one I just couldn't like as it's very sharp tree dominated. A bit too herbal for me. Very fresh!

Boreal- Much like Snow Wolf in that it is too herbal for my tastes. You can smell the eucalyptus right away with other things beneath it I can't identify. Very fresh as well. (Reverie Scent)

Hearth- An interesting scent which I do like, but isn't my favourite. You can smell the bread and faint dried fruit. I think this one is very much something that does speak of home-baking this time of year. I think it needs to grow on me a bit still but it's very homey and cozy.

Winter Divinity- My favourite of the bunch this is a relatively simple scent. It's peppermint and vanilla. It starts out quite strong with the peppermint with a very slight sweet note. Then over time the vanilla comes out more. Together they are really lovely and I think the name really suits! I can totally see a Winter Divine Being smelling like this! (Reverie Scent)

Lastly the Whipped Soap in Peppermint Cocoa smells amazing! I keep opening the container to smell it, and I've been longing for peppermint hot chocolate because this stuff smells exactly like the real stuff. No fake chocolate or cream scents here, just pure rich magnificence. Like Godiva truffles. It's even coloured to to look like there is bits of candy cane in it. (Which are actually cranberry seeds)

The soap itself is super light. You only need a bit and it applies and feels a bit like a cross between a soap and a moisturizer. It does make my skin less dry once you're out of the shower and it helps with shaving I found. One word of warning though because it is a peppermint scent don't use it on sensitive areas. A really lovely product that I'm glad I went out on a limb for to buy.

I believe Haus of Gloi re-opens after the holidays tomorrow with re-stocks of all the Yule scents. Be sure to check them out! Anything here that really catches your attention?

Haus of Gloi Yule

Haus of Gloi released their Yule 2011 collection today. It's quite a bit smaller than their Halloween release but I believe their Autumn release is their biggest of the year so that is expected. Anyways, it looks like a nice selection of scents. All prices are in USD.

Eggnoggin- The Haus 'nog! Cream, sugar, and a shot of dark rum topped with fresh grated nutmeg. Available as a Perfume Oil, Bubbling Scrub, Emulsifying Scrub, Pumpkin Butter, and Whipped Soap. This one sounds lovely doesn't it?

Hearth- The warm glowing centre of home. Autumns last apple pickings, warm bread, orange rind, various fire roasted nuts, cracked black pepper all nailed down by an oozing sticky benzoin. Available as Perfume oil, Bubbling Scrub, Emulsifying Scrub, Pumpkin Butter and handmade soap. Also interested in smelling this one.

Parkin- Glorious ginger cakes celebrating Guy Fawkes Day! Brown sugar, black treacle, oats, a peculiar blend of white spices topped with chopped roasted chestnuts and coated with the lightest of icings. Available as a Perfume oil, bubbling scrub, handmade soap, pumpkin butter, and sugar exfoliant.

Plotter's Breakfast- Oatey porridge, stove smoke, kindling wood, a hint of gunpowder and a pinch of sweet pipe tobacco. Available as a perfume oil, whipped soap, bubbling scrub, emulsifying scrub, and pumpkin butter.

Snow Wolf- Bristling and prowling, lonesome and haunting. Three howling firs, white frankincense, vanilla bean husk, tainted by droplets of blood cedar. Available as a perfume oil, bubbling scrub, handmade soap, emulsifying scrub, pumpkin butter and sugar exfoliant. This one sounds intriguing, I think I'd either love it or hate it!

Sweet Potato Treat- For me, this is the epitome of holiday comfort food: Sweet potatoes with mild spices, butter and brown sugar baked off with marshmallows. Available as a perfume oil, pumpkin butter and whipped soap. Personally not interested in this one, but that's because I don't like sweet potatoes.

Three Treasures- Sacred gifts of frankincense, myrrh and gold. Smoldering with warmth and brightened with a touch of mandarin rind. Available as a perfume oil, a handmade soap, bubbling scrub, emulsifying scrub, and a pumpkin butter. Oooh! This sounds like something I'd really like!

The perfume oils from this collection are $3 for a sample vial and $15 for a 5ml vial.
Bubbling scrubs are $3- $4.50 for a small 2oz tub or $9- $10 for a 6oz tub.
Emulsifying scrubs are all $11.
Pumpkin butters are $4.50 for a 2oz tub or $10 for a 6oz tub,
Handmade soaps are all $6.50 a slab.
Whipped Soaps are all $7.00 for a 6oz jar.

Haus of Gloi Autumn 2011 Order

As many of you know I recently made a Haus of Gloi order when their Fall collection came out. (If you're interested in seeing all the descriptions of the Autumn products you can check out my Post Here.) 

I've had some time to test out the scents now so I wanted to give you my views on the scents. My order came quickly and was well packaged with a cute little thank-you card and skull linen bag. So I was really pleased about that, plus shipping was extremely reasonable. The customer service was very good too, I asked if I could have Pumpkin Eater as my freebie since I knew one came with every order, and it was originally going to be one of the samples I was going to buy. Not only did they send me Pumpkin Eater,which in samples was only available in the sampler packs, but they sent me Imp free of charge too. You seriously can't ask for better service, and friendly speedy response to your e-mail.

As for the scents themselves? The ones I thought I was going to like the most (the large vials) I'm not too sure about.  Here are the scents I got and what I think about them:

• Olde Cider Haus: I'm on the fence about this one at the moment. It's quite sweet, but it doesn't quite pass the line into too sweet. I do get some wood smell to it which I like but it isn't quite what I expected either. Other people have said they smell the apple right away but I can't smell any apple at all. I do like it and I will wear it just not all the time.
• Pumpkin Eater: I really love the underlying spices in this one and it has a sweet warmth to it as well. Haven't gotten a chance to wear it for a full day yet but so far I'm tentatively giving it my fall stamp of approval. Makes me think of thanksgiving and my grandmother's pumpkin pie.
• White Raspberry: Sadly this doesn't smell like raspberries. Instead I get sweet almonds, medicinal-almost children's cough syrup, and a dab of cream. It smells way better on than in the bottle, but I was hoping for something fresher-fruitier if that makes sense. (Not part of the Fall release)
• Hex: You can almost taste the liquor from the description when you smell Hex. It's got the fruit too for sure but the alcoholic top note is quite strong. I think I'll warm up to this scent the more I'm exposed to it. The one caveat I have about it though is when I put it on my elbows my skin didn't react well to it. It turned red and stung a little. I'm not sure if I was just extra sensitive that day or what but I think I'm going to have to patch test it and see what happens from there.
• Saft Ernte: This one is just too sweet for me. I don't smell the peaches to it unfortunately, instead I get a strong ambiguous sweet smell with some underlying hazelnut smell. I really wanted to like it but I just can't. I thought if I wore it the smell might fade a bit and change with my body but I had to wash it off before I got to that point.
• Imp: (Not part of the Autumn release) They included this as a free sample and I am so glad they did. I smelled this and instantly fell in love. It's so fruity and almost bright. Actually my favourite out of all the scents I received, I'll eventually be picking this one up from their core line for sure.
• Red Roan: This little number took me by surprise. I can remember upon ordering the sample pack I was like huh they've included Red Roan, okay that's cool. It wasn't on my 'must get' list. I actually really like it though. It is most certainly porridge-like with quite a bit of maple syrup in there and a very slight sharp note (for the cognac- which I was surprised that it really balanced it out so well). I really like the feeling it gives me. Reminds me of warm wooly sweaters and country cottages. Can't really smell the strawberries to this at all though. I may pick up a full-size of this one.
• Samhain: This one is something I don't think would ever have entered the realm of my imagination as a scent to wear. It's very herbal and you definitely get this cold crisp wind sharpness to it at the end. You can certainly smell a bit of wet soil under the herbs too. Really unique. Not something I'd wear very often, but I do like it. 
• Pumpkin Queen: Much like Saft Ernte this one is too sweet for my tastes and I can't smell the peaches, which makes me sad. Pumpkin Queen I found to be less sweet than Saft Ernte though. You do get soft-hay in it at times too which I think is what makes it more bearable. I've kind of hummed and hawed about whether or not I actually like the scent, but in the end it's just too much. 

Finally (though not a part of the Autumn release) was my small tub of Depravity Body Emulsion. This is quite nice, it really has the lovely Depravity scent to it, and isn't so thin it's runny nor is it too thick that it feels like overkill. I've found that it leaves my legs quite soft when I apply it and the scent does stick around for a bit. I can't say this has done miracles for me, but it is a good quality body moisturizer. (Plus, the gypsy woman on the packaging is adorable).

Haus of Gloi Perfume Oil in Depravity

This is the other little Haus of Gloi item I received when I won the Product Pixie blog prize package. I still can’t believe how generous she was! Anyways, this is an itty bitty little perfume vial (5 ml) of Haus of Gloi’s Depravity scent. When I first looked at this I went “wow it’s small!” Then I went, “and it’s a perfume. Might as well give it a sniff then pass it along to my sister.” (Which by the way is my usual reaction to perfume vials as stated in my last Haus of Gloi review (here) I’m highly allergic to most perfumes)

Let’s just say my sister didn’t get this one.

I instantly loved the scent. Depravity is exactly as rich and heady as you’d expect from a perfume whose label is exemplified by a Gypsy Woman belly dancing. When I first smell it I get a bouquet of berries that had been preserved in liquor of some sort with spices. That falls away fairly quickly once it hits my skin and I find turns to insense a little bit of smoke, and the spice note from before. Eventually (read hours) later the perfume completely settles leaving a still strong sweet berry slightly powdery scent that I really love.

Like someone else said in their review (though I can’t remember for the life of me who, if it’s you please contact me and I’ll give you credit) these perfume oils keep the scents close to your skin, so someone has to get close to smell them instead of wafting around the person that causes people to stop and hack up a lung coughing.

I and the other reviewer both like this. I don’t want to bother other people with a scent that may not be to their preference but I still want to be able to smell it. It’s a wonderful compromise. Plus you know someone was much too close (or I suppose has an excellent sense of smell) if they comment on it. Hehe.

The little vial Depravity came in has a wand to apply it with, and you only need about one or two drops to last you all day. I personally like to apply perfume to my inner elbows and on the pulse point of my neck but you can apply these anywhere on the skin. (Don’t apply them to your clothes! These are oils and are yellow in colour (natural) and can stain your fabrics!)

I did find the little vial fiddly to work with (especially as it was filled to the very top, which I guess is both a good and bad thing). I transferred as much as I could out of the little vial into a dropper (which works very well) and then dabbed the mostly empty vial on myself for a few days till I’d gotten almost all of it out. I don’t know what the full size versions of Haus of Gloi packaging is like to compare to but when I receive my autumn order with a couple full size bottles I’ll let you know in those scent reviews.

When the oil goes on your skin of course it does feel slightly oily. However these oils sink into the skin almost right away (if they don’t you’re using too much!). Definitely enough time to transfer the oil to different places on your skin but not so long that you’ll get it on things.

I think this is a good idea in all honesty. Considering how much the average perfume costs the amount of perfume we lose to spray through the air to hit us must be astronomical. Plus I can go back and sniff the inside of my elbow if I want to smell it stronger again (strange I know but it smells so nice!)

The perfume oils seem to wash away very easily too so if you want to change perfumes and have only placed the first one in one or two areas you can take it off with soap and water easily. I found this out by having some on my wrists then washing my hands later on and finding the scent had vanished.

The perfume oil hasn’t caused any skin irritations (like acne or a rash) that some perfumes can, even when applied to the neck. I do still get a very slight allergic reaction (itchy nose) when I apply Depravity to my neck as well as my inner elbows, but I’m fine if I leave it off my neck or take an allergy pill. That’s a super better reaction than a killer headache, itchiness in the back of the throat and trying to claw my nose and eyes off my face in torment that I get with almost all of mainline brand perfumes.

The perfume oils generally cost $2.50 USD for a glass sample vial (5ml), and $12.50 USD for a full size amber-glass perfume bottle (25ml). I know the next time I come into a little money I’m going to be placing an order for a full size Depravity. It smells so nice!

Overall, I don’t know what they’re doing at Haus of Gloi to come of with these wonderful things that they do but I want some of it.

Sprite Rating: 10/10- I love this perfume, nothing bad to say about it!

Would I buy it again? Yes! I'll be ordering a full size when I get a chance.

Also please note, like colours and tastes people can have very different opinions on what smells good to them. This is just how I’ve perceived this scent to be. Plus each persons unique body chemistry reacts slightly differently to each perfume formula, changing what you smell. This can sometimes be a good change or a bad change, but it’s rarely exactly the same from person to person, so please keep that in mind. Thanks!

Haus of Gloi Soft Bubbling Scrub~ Review

Recently, I won a giveaway from the wonderful Product Pixie blog. Kathrine the blogger also sent along two Haus of Gloi sample size items. I've since fallen in love with the brand. This is one of the two items she sent me Soft Bubbling Scrub in Apothecary.

I'm going to do this in two sections, the first about the formula of the scrub itself and the second about the scent Apothecary. The amazing thing about Haus of Gloi is that there scents are universal across their product lines so you can get simply the perfume oils or have the scent incorporated in things like their scrubs.

The packaging firstly is fantastic. The attention to detail on the Soft Bubbling Scrub is wonderful. Each has the scent name and product type clearly written along with a old 1700s style picture that matches the scent. The amount of product, scent description, and ingredients are all clearly listed as well. Honestly for an indie brand Haus of Gloi branding and design blows me away. 

The little tub itself is recyclable (yay) plastic that easily opens or screws tightly shut. The label also shows no signs of coming off yet despite multiple uses in the shower, which is a great bonus.

When I first read the name and description from Haus of Gloi about their Soft Bubbling Scrubs I thought that the product itself would feel much more, well soft. Or creamy. Don't be fooled, it isn't soft- at first. When you go to scoop some out it is an extremely stiff sugar FILLED mixture. Once on your fingers you don't need hardly anything at all before you rub it into wet skin. All the sugar makes for a wonderful effective scrub. When it meets water it almost turns to a creamy-suds with a prominent scent. 

It goes on really well and washes off well too. No stinging or pain from the scrub being too harsh on my sensitive skin, or from shaving nicks. Plus you don't feel greasy or oily afterwards but it does leave the scent behind and the faint feeling of slight moisturization. Oh and lets not forget wonderfully smooth skin.

Now lets talk about the scent. I'd like to first start off with the fact that before this I've never had the scent from a scrub actually stick around! This actually continues to give off a subtle scent even after I've toweled myself off.

As for the Apothecary scent itself here is the Haus of Gloi's description:

I find this scent quite herbal. As I'm allergic to the scent of lavender for the most part I find Apothecary a bit too much to handle. To me this scrub smells strongly of lemongrass and lavender mainly. I find I like the scent in the shower where it diffuses a bit, but I wouldn't probably order it again due to my lavender allergy. However, don't let that stop you! If you like herbal, earthy, scents this one is lovely and unique. 

I took a photo of the little jar by my lens cap so you can see how small it is. It fits nicely in my tiny hands so I hope that gives you a better idea of how small the sample/travel sizes on the Haus of Gloi site are.

The small size is $3.50 USD for 2 oz and the large is $8.00 USD for 6 oz. You can see all the Soft Bubbling Scrubs on the Haus of Gloi website, there really is a scent for everyone in my humble opinion. Or you can get Aether which is their scentless version. As a side note, Haus of Gloi is completely vegan, which is great too!

Overall, I think this is the best scrub I've come across to date. You don't need much to make a huge difference, it doesn't bother my sensitive skin and it's not too expensive. No greasy residue and the scent sticks around too. Couldn't be better!

Sprite Rating: 9/10- the only reason this product didn't get full marks is because my nose doesn't really agree with the scent, and the fact that you do have to order online so you can't smell beforehand in person.

Would I Buy It Again? I'll probably pick up another Soft Bubbling scrub in a different scent as I do adore how well it works. 

New things happening at Hebridean Sprite Beauty

Hey everyone just a quick update on things here on Hebridean Sprite Beauty. I've succumbed to Twitter, so you can follow and talk to me there under HebrideanSprite. A general home tab which will take you back to the main page, a contact me one which just moved the contact information and a Desires page which are items that have caught my interest that I'll change up every once in a while and why I'm interested in them in the first place. Haus Of Gloi Autumn 2011

Today, Haus of Gloi released their Autumn collection at 9:00 PST or 12:00 EST. Having heard such wonderful things about them, most especially their autumn collection I made my first order. I had heard of them off and on in the past but being highly wary of scents (most standard perfumes cause me bad headaches) I decided to pass.

However, I recently won Product Pixie's giveaway and in it she included not only a ton of other awesome prizes but 2 of them were Haus of Gloi and I fell in love. One was a sample of Depravity Perfume oil, a really awesome scent. It starts out berry and smoky and then over time become insense and clove to eventually die down to a sweet powdery smell. Plus no headaches! You can really tell there isn't any alcohol or cheap things in these!

I've really enjoyed it so far, especially at night time. The other was a sample tub of their bubbling scrub in Apocrathy. It's more of an herbal scent, which I like but don't like as much as Depravity. I haven't tried it yet in the shower but when I do I'll let you know. As a major plus the entire company is vegan, even their honey fragrances (they use a synthetic that smells like honey but isn't from animals).

So onto the Autumn release which is Haus of Gloi's most famous seasonal collection. The Sold Out items are the ones that are already sold out (despite this being only 2 hours after the autumn collection was released!)

There are six sections in the Autumn release: Perfume Oils, Candy Bowl, Bubbling Scrubs, Pumpkin Butter, Emulsifying Scrub, and Handmade Soap.

The Perfume Oils include-
3 different Sampler Packs (varying prices $12.50- $9.00)

Ceremony: Dusty beeswax candles, frankincense, myrrh, mastic, spikenard, pale honey, a pinch of tobacco, and faded musk. $17 USD

Hex: You've been bewitched! Brackish amber, aged vanilla bean and three dark fruits, veiled in darkness and otherworldly secrecy. $15 USD

Saft Ernte: A merry drink of harvest and glowing with warmth: Peach juice simmering with sweet spices, pumpkin, silken hazelnut cream, and made completely curious with a drop of orange blossom water. $15 USD
