High Voltage Cosmetics~ Review and Swatches

A couple months ago I had ordered a ton of samples from High Voltage Cosmetics, an indie company that has a high variety of eyeshadow colours as well as some lip products (which I didn't get samples of). Everything came nicely packaged in a bubble-wrapped envelope with the samples in little baggies with the names on little stickers. All the baggies were placed together in a larger baggie with gold stars on it which I thought was nice. There was also a small hand written thank-you as well. Unfortunately, I didn't receive all the samples I ordered and though I've e-mailed multiple times I've yet to get a response in return.

The best thing about High Voltage eyeshadows I think is the wonderful duochrome options. Truly unique and absolutely fabulous, there are options available for everyone! I ordered the entire Norse Mythology collection as well as some from the permanent lines too. I certainly have some favourites but some I was a bit disappointed in too. One thing I was kinda disappointed about was that one of my shadow samples was missing- part of the collection was the shadow Mani and Sol from the Norse Mythology Collection but I never recieved it. I did however recieve 2 Vali and 2 Uggdrasil for some reason. I received a couple other extra shadow samples in my order too but I would have liked the Mani and Sol alot I think.

Favourites- Vali (MOST FAVOURITE!), Stiletto Strut, Twilight Symphony, Vor, Baldr, Thorr, Radio Waves, Born to Rock (not shown- was mixed into the purple mix), Sif, Aasgard

Disappointments- Smoke and Mirrors (darker than I wanted- not as pigmented as I wanted), Snotra wasn't unique enough, Mead of Suttungr (kind of patchy- looks white instead of off-white on), Manhatten (too dark- not really different than alot of charcoals out there), Tyr (really looks rust like to me, too close to rust coloured for me to want to wear).

I did attempt to contact the owner of High Voltage cosmetics twice and never heard back from her. I had asked her a bunch of questions about her company and herself- even just getting a response saying they were happy I was reviewing their shadows but can't take the time to fill out my questions would have been appreciated. But I didn't have any issues with the service at all- cheap shipping, good sample prices, lots of variety and fairly quick shipping. The only downside was the one shadow missing.

I found the sample baggies a pain due to their finickiness and difficultly to not get the shadow everywhere using them though they were well labeled. The samples weren't large enough to even press a shadow pan a quarter of the way filled- the mixes were three or four shadows combined together and the shadow pans still weren't full- which was a shame as I was hoping to press them to use. When I use them out of the bags I get the powder all over my hands and the surface I'm working over. Also, the website could really benefit from a search bar! I found it hard to find certain shades a second time browsing the website.

All in all though I do like the company and I think there are some great options here. However unless you can handle eyeshadows from little baggies I don't recommend ordering any samples unless you're really unsure of a colour- just choose wisely based on online swatches and order the full size. Anyways here are my many swatches- Enjoy!

Hebridean Sprite Beauty's 1st Birthday!

From image here
A year ago today I certainly didn't think I'd be here. As a sufferer of ADHD I have a sad tendency to start something and then get distracted by something else and leave things unfinished. However the wonders of make-up has persevered and Hebridean Sprite Beauty Blog has made it to it's very first birthday!
As something that started as a way to express my more creative side as well as my need to shout out my opinion and keep up my writing skills this blog has most certainly accomplished it's original goal. I've also been able to really interact with some other awesome beauty junkies, felt like I've accomplished something and even had a stress reduction outlet! I've learned a lot and I hope I've been helpful as well.

In the coming year I hope to keep doing what I've been doing. Reviews, swatches, deals, links and opinions. Hopefully at least one giveaway and survey, as well as some sparse animal posts. I'm sure there will be more too- I'd love to hear your opinions! What would you like to see?

As a side note my Fyrinnae order came today! Perfect timing it's like a little gift to myself for this anniversary! How cool hmm? I hope to have swatches up soonish.

As for the coming couple of weeks things are going to be hectic for me! We're selling our house and moving to a completely different city- so packing, painting, cupboard and counter renovations and more will be going on. I'll try not to disappoint though.

Lots of Love to all my readers (I appreciate every single one of you!),
Krista, a.k.a. Hebridean Sprite :D

Blogger Love! Miss Diorista

I've started a new section of the blog called Blogger Love! These are interviews with other bloggers that I really love! Not all of these are cruelty-free products only but they all update fairly regularly and are worth a look!
First up is Miss Diorista, this blog is by a great girl from Iceland named Gudrun.
Check her out here! She features both beauty and skincare products as well as her baking creations! Enjoy!

 1)   Are you more of a Morning, Day, or Night time person?
I'm a day and night time person... I like to sleep in and stay up, and I can function quite well with little sleep. I sometimes find that I don't wake up entirely until in the evening! However, when I do get up early, I love all the extra time I get, and how beautiful everything is in the morning.

2)   Something you struggle with on a day to day basis?
Maybe going to bed earlier? That is really something I always mean to do, but somehow I never do it.

3)   Favourite Animal?
Definitely cats! They are so wise and beautiful.

4)   Favourite Colour?
I love so many colours, but I especially love green, all shades of green, blue and purple.

5)   Preferred foundation coverage and finish ex. Heavy coverage, matte
Medium coverage and I like a satin finish. However, I can achieve that finish with a setting powder, so I'm not too strict when buying foundation.
6)   How old are you?
18.

7)   What do you do in everyday life? If you’re a student what is your major?
I'm a student. The school system here in Iceland is a little bit different from the one in the USA. Our "high school" is for 16 to 20 year-olds, so I'm halfway through. My main subjects are biology, chemistry and mathematics, but I also study languages.
8)   First makeup brand that really got you interested in cosmetics?
Dior! I think it was the design of the logo that first got me interested, it is so elegant, but when I got older, I learned that the products are great, too.

9)   Do you have any makeup or skin care items that are perfect for you? (HG items) If so which- include shade names.
I love the Diorskin Nude foundation, I'm in shade 010. My favourite eyeshadow is MAC's Satin Taupe, which I have as a single (not in a palette) so that I can take it with me wherever I go. It is the perfect contour colour! Otherwise, I try to rotate my products as much as I can, to keep things fun and fresh.

10)  What is your favourite food? Drink?
I think you can't go wrong with sushi, salmon sushi that is. I also love chicken with mango sauce. For a drink, I love the icelandic water, as well as sparkling water.

11)  Favourite Gem Stone?
Tiger's Eye! It is so pretty... with all the different yellow and brown shades in it... google it, you won't regret it!

12) Do you have any pets in your life? If yes, what are their names (and can we have pictures?)
Yes, I do. I have a four months old Persian kitten. She's a girl, and her name is Penny. She's so sweet furry and adorable!

13) One place you’ve never been that you want to visit?
So many! I really want to visit Egypt though, as well as explore the USA and Canada, since I've only once been to the USA (Boston, to be specific) and I've never been to Canada.

14) What inspired you to start your blog?
During my finals last spring (2010) I needed something to take my mind of the books in between exams. I started watching beauty videos on YouTube, and very soon I became completely addicted to makeup and skincare. There was no turning back! A few weeks later, during summer, I started thinking that I could maybe put everything I'd learned about makeup and beauty to use for someone else than just me - so I started my blog. I could never have imagined how much fun it is!

15)  What are some of the most useful things you’ve learned about since you started blogging?
There are many things you learn, but most importantly, I've learned how important it is to feel beautiful. Not only with makeup, but also without it. You have to learn to appreciate yourself.
And on a lighter sidenote, I've learned how easy it is to spend too much!

16) Favourite Season?
Here in Iceland, the seasons can be strange. The weather is somewhat unpredictable, and each season offers something beautiful. Right now, I'm loving spring and summer, but I also love the colours of autumn and the snow and the dark sky with the stars in the winter... I can't pick just one!

17) What do you use to take your blog photos? What type of computer?
I use a Casio Exilim 7.2 Mega Pixels. I like it and I don't like it... sometimes it acts up and blurries up all my pictures, especially if I'm trying to photograph the texture of a powder or the finish of a polish... but sometimes it is perfect, so I haven't decided to spend money on a new camera just yet. My computer is a HP Pavilion dv3, and I really like that one.

18) What genre of movies/books do you like?
For books I mostly like artistic books... ever read something and the text sounds and feels and touches your heart like music? That's the kind. However, I write myself, so I like to explore different styles and techniques as well.
For movies and TV shows I love exciting films, for example crime investigation and the like. I also love romantic movies and I of course enjoy a good comedy. I'm not so picky, actually.

19) Other hobbies or events that you’re involved in?
As I mentioned above, I write. I write both poems and short stories, and I've written one novel, which I have yet to re-write. I've also played the piano for ten or eleven years, and I love to sit down and play for a few minutes when I'm busy. It takes my mind off things.
Not to forget that I love to dance, especially salsa!

20) Most unique eyeshadow you own?
Make Up Store's shadow in Aqua. It is an absolutely beautiful aqua blue colour with the most unique shimmer/sheen I've ever seen. I love wearing it on my waterline every now and then, for a super-bright pop of colour!

21) Most unique lip product?
MAC's Beachbound lipstick. It's a glaze and it came out last summer with the "To The Beach". It is really unique, a shimmery apricot colour. Almost not a colour though, it's very sheer. I love using it over pink lipstick instead of a gloss, it's a new twist.

22) Favourite colour combinations?
There are so many beautiful ones, but I've been a fan of lime green and light purple or lavender for many years. It's bright and fun.

23) Favourite piece of jewelry? Why is it your favourite?
I'm not sure I have a favourite... I love one necklace this month, another one the next... however, some of my favourite pieces are earrings. Any kind, really, but since I haven't had my ears pierced, they have to be the old-fashioned clip-system ones. Those are getting rare and hard to find here in Iceland, but I stocked up last summer, when I was in Germany. Something about beautiful earrings changes the shape of my face in pretty way, which is why I love wearing earrings.

24) Best drugstore product you’ve tried?
Maybelline lipsticks! There are so many beautiful colours, the colour range is nice, they last well and smell amazing!

25) Random fact you’d like to share
I love all kinds of music, but jazz is what has me dancing and singing every single time!

Interesting Magazine Ads

Isn't this ad for both the Pirate's of the Caribbean movie and the nail polish collection that goes with it gorgeous?! I absolutely love it! Such great representation!
This is from the same magazine, and I'm in love! These are slide on earrings from EarCharms.com, a place with a ton of awesome designs for people that DON'T have pierced ears! Yay for no cartilage piercing (yeow!) I love the leaf design and they have some other awesome ones too!
This is the new IKEA Skurar plant pot. I know the white isn't great but with a bit of spray paint on the bottom with the lace left white (or vise versa) this would be totally awesome! Plus only $2.99 CND. I love the potential this piece has! Ikea has wonderful things. (Have you ever heard the Ikea song by Jonathan Coulton? It's hilarious and really catchy!)

That's all I've got at the moment, I might do something similar in the future. :D

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Shadow Pencil in Sin~ Review

Makeup by Urban Decay at ShopStyle
Recently I picked up one of the new Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Shadow Pencils, in the colour Sin. Sin is a really lovely soft pink with peach undertones- a champagne pink. It has a shimmer throughout but it isn't frosty- it just really lights up your eye giving a natural but pretty youthful look. I don't usually go for more neutral shades such as this but it is really lovely.

It comes in a very convienent to travel pencil with a very secure metal lid (at least secure in the sense of pencil lids- they're never extremely secure but you get my point). I like the chubby pencil end- though unfortunately you do have to sharpen it which always really bugs me. They have the technology to create twist up pencils, why won't they use it!?
Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Pencil in Sin Swatched
What I really truly love about this pencil though is all formula. It's super soft and applies without patchiness- unlike my similar Mac Shadestick (in Nurture) or my GOSH shadow pencils (in Gold and Ivory). You don't need to blend this on your lid to make it look nice again as I must with my Mac Shadestick and Gosh shadow pencils. On top of this it dries down completely- no slight tackiness as with the other two products. Plus it lasts and lasts- no creasing (even without a primer!) and only very slight fading. It lasts through water but comes off extremely easily with soap and water or make-up remover.
Left: Mac Nurture Shadestick; Right: Urban Decay Sin Shadow  Pencil
(In Crappy Indoor Lighting)
Overall- I'm in love. I want more of the shades and I think these are perfect for summer- especially the shade Lit a super lovely bronzy colour that I debated getting instead of Sin. Unfortunately, they are kind of expensive at $20 USD or $24 CND for 0.1 oz but the quality is really there.

Sprite Rating: 9/10 Lost point for the fact they must be sharpened (such a waste of product!)

Would I buy it again? Yes! I want so many more of these.

CannonBall Waterproof Mascara by Urban Decay

(Click to see this image bigger)

For the mermaids, highly emotional and super athletes among us! Urban Decay has just released their new waterproof mascara CannonBall. I love the water effect on the name of the tube.

They state that it's super lightweight and doesn't flake all while adding length and volume.
I've not tried it though I may have to just to see how this holds up to the claims! Only comes in one shade (black) and costs $20 USD.

Milani Liqui'feye Metallic Eye Pencil in Dark Brown~ Review

From the Milani Website

This eyeliner pencil by Milani is one of five shades and all the rave reviews about it are well deserved! Although not metallic, despite the name this dark brown shade is extremely creamy, highly pigmented and long lasting to boot! Matte dark brown suits everyone and this one is very neutral as far as undertone goes- neither warm nor cool. As a plus they’re inexpensive as well!

Though hard to find in Canada if you can find these little gems they are totally worth the look. I can easily compare these to the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner pencils as far as durability, pigmentation and creaminess go- which is amazing as Urban Decay’s pencils are about 3 times the price and are well known as some of the best pencils available.

The swatch shown is only one swipe across skin, with hardly any pressure- isn’t that colour rich?!
I have heard that these dry out rather quick but as I've only had it a couple weeks now, I can't comment on this. Overall though I'm so far loving this pencil- it even lasts decently on my waterline which is rare for me.

Sprite rating: 9/10 Difficult to find in Canada and may dry out quickly. Also not metallic like it advertises.

Would I buy it again? Yes, I want more colours!

DIY: Manicure

I was asked awhile ago in a comment about my manicures. Whether I do them myself and if I do my pedicures too. It was such a good comment it inspired me to do this post! (Thanks McHuggs!) I do like to get my nails and toenails done once in awhile! Just not as often lately as I've been spending the money on cosmetics instead. Plus, you really don't want to see my feet. However, I cant do a spring pedicure products and favourite colours post if people are interested. In the mean time, here is the products I use for my manicures, Enjoy!
1. First you're going to need a good polish remover. I love the ones that have a sponge with slots in it to put your fingers inside. It seems weird but the polish is so much easier to remove. Especially glitter polishes. After I remove my polish remnants I like to quickly wash my hands as I find polish remover to be very drying if you leave it on for any length of time.

2. Good, clean nail tools are the most important part of making your manicure look good. I like this little kit of Revlon ones (plus some extras) which includes a pair of tweezers, a pair of nail clippers, a metal file, a cuticle stick and a cuticle cutter (which doesn't get used often as cutting your cuticles is not a good idea generally. It can lead to infection, so instead just push them back). Cut your nails and shape them to the desired look. Round is the easiest shape, but there are a variety of shapes you can choose from :D.
3. After shaping my nails (approximately the same from nail to nail- something I struggle with at times), if my cuticles are in really bad shape I like to use the Revlon Gentle Cuticle Remover. At first I was a bit leery of this product- a topical product to remove my cuticles? This is either not going to work at ALL or it's going to sting like crazy! However, this product is great. It doesn't remove your main cuticle what it does is loosen the very thin base cuticle that grows onto your nail. This also helps loosen you main cuticle enough so that you can more easily push it back. I generously gloop this on with the polish wand and then apply a second layer a minute or so later. Then I take one of my reusable cuticle sticks and gently using the bevelled edge push back my cuticles.
4. After washing my hands again I usually moisturize my hands with focus on my cuticles. This the Body Shop Strawberry Puree Body Lotion is very light and non-greasy. It sinks in fast too (though it could do with some more moisturization properties). Usually I use whatever moisturizer I happen to have on hand, and this one was the closest!
5. Now, finally I start the painting part. First is one to two coats (depending on the condition of my nails) of Nail Tek II Intensive Therapy. I use this as a base coat as it does wonders for strengthening my nails.
6. Colour! Here is Sephora OPI's Caught with my Khaki's Down, and I've used two coats for this manicure. Of course this varies from polish to polish :D. The best way to apply I find is from the bottom of the nail to the top in as wide a stroke as you feel in control of. The less strokes per coat the better, as you'll have less streaks and imperfections. Keep in mind, practice makes perfect!
7. Lastly, because I can't wait patiently to save myself and because I'm guarenteed to destroy my manicure if I don't- Quick Dry Top Coat. I love China Glaze's Fast Forward as it is really really fast and it makes the polish very shiny. Also, I adore this top coat for the fact that it levels and hides small imperfections from my colour coats. To wrap up the manicure it's a good idea to take your top coat along the tips of your nails- both on top and beneath your nail. This will seal the edge of your nail and make your manicure last longer.

Finally the finished product! I am loving this colour- perfect sage green, sometimes green and sometimes grey. Adore!
New sheets and it matches perfectly!

Lorac TANtalEYES Palette~ Swatches & Impressions

Eye Shadow by LORAC at ShopStyle

Out for Summer, Lorac has released a eyeshadow quad called TANtalEYES. I think the name is really cute, if a bit corny. The palette itself however is lovely!

All four shades are generous in size and highly pigmented. The four colours- white gold, copper, olive green and burgundy are all shimmery almost metallic finish.
All four shades were beautiful! I really wanted the palette myself but I already own shades that are near identical for the two darker shades. Plus the palette comes with a bronzer illuminator that I wouldn't use so it would have been a waste.
The real kicker about this palette and bronzer though is the price for us Canadians. The set costs $47 CND or (for you lucky americans) $36 USD.

So what do you think a great summer palette or just more of the same?
